Assault on the Vatican – a sinister and dangerous intrigue. This novel is played out amidst the backdrop of many of the twentieth century's greatest conflicts. Sean is a troubled man with a number of secrets. His involvement in the Irish uprising and a personal tragedy leading to the disintegration of his marriage to Martha, prompt him to leave Ireland for England. During World War 2 he is enlisted by British Intelligence and charged to carry out an audacious and dangerous plan. His mission takes him to Germany, accompanied by another agent, Lily, and there they encounter the horror of the Nazis' "Final Solution". Several twists and turns of the plot result in the completion of their assignment, but things are never straightforward in Sean's world. A picaresque novel with a sweeping sense of adventure

A Pious Killing A Sean Colquhoun Adventure Book 1 edition by Mick Hare Literature Fiction eBooks

Sean Colquhoun is an Irish doctor who becomes a British agent during WWII. This story covers his life, his mission, and his emotions from the 20's to the end of the War. The writing is excellent. The characters become real for the reader. You become emotionally connected to them. Description can be graphic and sometimes gruesome but that is the way it was during this time in history. This could have been a five star book except for glaring mistakes in grammar, word usage, and sentence structure. This is a great story and well worth reading even with the errors. I enjoyed this book.

A Pious Killing A Sean Colquhoun Adventure Book 1 edition by Mick Hare Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A Pious Killing is a very interesting book. it was difficult to keep from not reading it as was reading negative reaction to the Catholic church and people within the church. Let not those criticisms prevent you from reading this.
Things happen in real life by real people. History has recorded fact. This is a entertaining book to read. Suspense and intrigue keep you reading this fictitious book that intertwined itself with documented history
This book was a good mix of fiction and history blended into a great story that was very well researched and written. The plot was very intriguing and really gives the reader an insight into what went on during that horribly brutal time in history. It is hard to comprehend that the human race could treat other human beings in such a merciless, cold-blooded way. But as we know, that facet of this story is historically correct. This was quite a page turner. However, another edit would be advisable.
Keep reminding yourself as you read this that it is historical fiction, with emphasis on the fiction. Many facts are presented, however, with respect to the plight of Jews under Nazi domination. A trio of unlikely heroes evade SS officers and German soldiers as they attempt an escape through Italy, to Argentina, after successfully completing the surprisingly successful assassination. Catholicism is not spared as the author explores some of the attitudes that served to enable the Nazi program of “relocation” of Jews. The successful assassination is a real surprise. The aftermath is even moreso.
I enjoyed this book, but it was confusing to be told a tale about an Irish partisan fighting against the British who also was a British doctor serving in Germany. Two identities. Too much.
I thought the story was very good, characters were interesting - good guys were likeable for the most part; bad guys were *really* bad. Descriptions were certainly real, in my opinion, especially the Gestapo tactics. My biggest complaint was the spelling errors, punctuation errors and formatting. As a fanfic writer and editor, these things distracted me more than I liked. My fingers itched to format correctly and get the spelling and punctuation correct. But, in the end, the story was good. Would be interesting to see a sequel to this story. I haven't read the other book ... yet.
Really enjoyed this book,a ton of action interspersed with WW II espionage, deceit, romance and of course the SS, and all the fabled stories of their methodical torture and interrogation procedures. It's all here for the taking. One of those novels I couldn't put down. One twist after another taking us down the road of spies ,agents and double agents. This was a lot of fun. Our story ends with Sean and his female partner traversing on a tramp steamer in the waning days of the war. They're on the way to Argentina to try to track down a couple missing pieces from the war in Europe. I guess you and I will have to continue the story in author Mick Hares' continuation of this story line and the life and times of one Sean Colquhoun. Great work Mr. Hare
I didn't know what I would be getting into with this book because of so many mixed reviews. Some stated it was a rascist book. Some stated it was against the church. Some really liked it. I fall into the last group. I got this book for two reasons, it was free and the cover had a Nazi flag on it and I'm into WWII. At first the book was a little slow and there was some jumping back and forth in the time line so I was a little worried about what I had gotten into. Then it started clicking and it grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go.

The story is about a man name Sean who has the past haunt him, a woman named Lilly who is torn between revenge and love being thrown together to wreak havoc on German'y war. Sean is also being consumed with revenge and we get to see how it will eventually blind him to logic as he chases down his personal demons. The book has a lot of gritty realism as it talks about things that happened during the war. As to the book being rascist, it was dealing with Nazi Germany so to be realistic there had to be rascism. As to the book being against the church, there are (I'm sure the number is small but it has been enlarged by the media) priests who have taken liberties with small boys. Again, the author was being realistic.

All in all this was a very solid book. The ending is surprising and the suspense is great. There are times you will want Sean or Lilly to get caught and then a few pages you will be back on their side again. Nothing wrong with that, just be prepared for a great rollercoaster ride of the emotions. This was a very good book that I am glad I got to read.
